We woke at 4:00 am to get dressed, and get the last things packed up. I sent my hubby outside as soon as he woke to see if the fridge was cold, and it was! All the praise hands ππΌππΌππΌ!!! I had planned to leave at 5:00 am, which really meant I wanted to leave by 6:00 am… I gave us an hour buffer… we didn’t end up leaving until 6:30 am and then we had to make a stop (at a Flying J) shortly after we left (probably within 30 minutes) because I was already getting nauseous. I would later discover how cool the RV spot we pulled into was because you could get up, get water, and dump all at the same spot!
So we were planning to head straight to Hoover Dam to try to get in for the Power Plant Tour, but we had to make a stop in Primm for gas, at another Flying J but we were in with all the big rigs this time… that’s where Ryan learned that you can only pump from one side of the gas pump at a truck stop which is why there is no card reader on the other side… and that’s also where the propane alarm wouldn’t stop going off in the RV, I could hit the mute button, but by the time I walked back up to my seat, it would go off again. So… we ended up unhooking it for the rest of the trip. Unfortunately after our 2 gas station stops, we didn’t get to Hoover Dam early enough to get tickets to go on the last tour of the day, but we did get to walk on the Memorial Bridge Walkway (it was crazy windy and crazy hot… like 115 degrees!), as well as drive over the dam.
Since it was really hot and windy while we went on the walkway, we just drove to one of the RV parking lots, snapped a selfie, then turned around and drove back across because it was too hot to get out to explore again.
If you are planning to visit the Hoover Dam, let me give you a few tips…
- Before they will let you in, they will ask if you have any firearms on board, if you do, they will make you turn around and leave. So… if you are traveling with firearms, make sure you drop them off somewhere before you head out to the Hoover Dam
- It is CRAZY windy on the Memorial Bridge, it’s crazy cool too, but if you are heading out there, and you have on a hat, take it off… mine flew off when I got toward the road, but thankfully, it hit the deck, and my hubby was able to catch it for me. We ended up snapping them onto our belt loops so we could walk out and not lose our hat, but there were many many people who were not so lucky based on the amount of hats we saw on the side of the mountain.
- Kids younger than 8 aren’t allowed on the Hoover Dam Tour, but they are allowed on the Power Plant Tour, so if you want to take your young kids, make sure you get their early or you will miss out. We arrived at 3:40 pm and they said it was too late to get tickets that day.
- You can park your RV in the first parking lot to the right after the security check if you are coming in from the Nevada side, then you can get out and walk up to the Memorial Bridge Walkway.
- You can also park your RV in Lots 13, 14, or 15, they are actually on the Arizona side, if you want to actually walk on the dam. The parking is free if you are in an RV.
After our visit to Hoover Dam, we drove back into Vegas to spend the night parked at our friend Matt, Mandy, and Max’s house… but since it was so hot… we decided to take Mandy up on her offer to let us stay inside. So the kids had such a fun night playing with their friend Max and all of his cool toys, and we stayed cool, staying inside for the night.
